He combines the strict horizontal thinking of the Baroque, as found in fugues, with the vertical compositional style of the Classical era, expressed in sonata form – and yet he questions every tenet and reaches far ahead into the freedom of Romanticism.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGulda\u003c\/strong\u003e, a lover of fast cars, drives so fearlessly and consistently into the steep walls of this expansive work like no other pianist.
